Castleford Forum Museum

The displays aren't fancy, but they're thoughtfully done, with decent explanations of what life was like for soldiers stationed on the edge of Roman Britain.

It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity rather than flashiness. You'll walk through in under an hour unless you're the sort who reads every label, which is fine - there's enough here to keep history types genuinely interested without overwhelming them. Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers; younger ones tend to tire of static displays quickly.

Admission is free, which is always welcome. The museum punches above its weight for a small Yorkshire town, particularly if you're already in the area exploring Castleford's Roman heritage or heading to Nostell Priory Holiday Park just a few miles away. That parkland estate makes a solid base for the region, and combining the museum with a day at the house and grounds gives you a proper cultural stop without pretension.
