Castleton Visitor Centre

The visitor centre sits right at the heart of Castleton village, which makes it a sensible first stop if you're planning to explore the Hope Valley properly. It's the place to get your bearings before heading out to the caves - Speedwell, Peak, Treak and Winnats are all within spitting distance - and to pick up maps if you're serious about walking the surrounding hills.

What you'll find inside is the usual setup: information boards about the local geology, the lead mining heritage, and what's actually worth doing in the area. Staff can tell you which caves are worth the entrance fee and which ones are a bit of a slog. They'll also point you towards decent walks that don't require technical gear, which matters if you've got kids in tow.

It's free to pop in, takes about twenty minutes to browse if you're not dawdling, though you can spend longer chatting to whoever's on duty. Go early morning if you want actual breathing room - afternoons get rammed with tour groups.

If you're based at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club - just half a mile away - it's literally your first port of call after pitching up. Laneside is a bit further out but still close enough for a quick walk over. The visitor centre won't eat up your whole day, but it'll save you making rubbish choices about where to spend your time in the valley.
