Castlewellan Forest Park

The lake at Castlewellan Forest Park is what first catches you - a proper expanse of water ringed by conifers that somehow feels both grand and intimate. The 1,000-acre estate spreads across the slopes above the village of Castlewellan, and admission is free, which alone makes it worth the drive from Newry or anywhere else in County Down.

You can walk the full perimeter (allow a couple of hours for that), or just potter around the shoreline if you've got little ones in tow. The rhododendron collection is spectacular in late spring - walls of purple and pink that feel almost overwhelming. There's a proper adventure playground, a walled garden dating back to the 1850s, and enough woodland trails to keep walkers occupied for half a day. Families with young kids will get a solid afternoon out of it without feeling rushed.

The park sits in genuine mountain country - the Mournes rise up not far away - so the setting itself is the main draw. It's not about historic buildings or exhibitions; it's the landscape and the chance to move around it. Free parking, free entry, and generally quiet even in summer.

Stay at Escape Glamping just over a mile away if you want comfort, or rough it at Camping Tollymore Forest Park 2.8 miles down the road. Both put you within easy reach of this place and Tollymore itself, which is worth visiting separately. The walled garden and lake walks justify a full day if you've got time, but even two hours here feels well spent.
