Castor Hanglands NNR

The Castor Hanglands is a proper working nature reserve just outside Stamford, where the Nene Valley starts to show its teeth. These are steep limestone grasslands - not the gentle slopes you might expect from the Midlands. Hang around here and you'll spot orchids, rare butterflies, and if you're lucky, adders basking on the south-facing banks.

It's free to wander, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the wildflowers are at their peak and the insects are out. You'll need proper walking boots - the ground is uneven and can be slippery when wet. Most people allow two to three hours, though you can do a quick loop in 45 minutes if you're pressed for time.

This is ideal for serious nature enthusiasts and photographers rather than casual strollers. Children aged eight and up will manage fine if they're into spotting wildlife, but younger kids might find it a bit dull without much to do.
