Castra Vindolanda

The Roman fort at Vindolanda sits right on the Stanegate, the military road that predates Hadrian's Wall by a good couple of decades. What you're looking at is serious archaeology - not a theme park version of Roman Britain, but the actual layered remains of a fort that was occupied and abandoned multiple times between roughly 85 and 370 AD.

The museum here is the real draw. Those famous writing tablets - thin wooden postcards from Roman soldiers - came from this very site, and seeing them is like holding an ancient text message. The reconstructed fort buildings give you a proper sense of scale, and the finds on display tell the story of what daily life actually looked like for the garrison. It's not flashy, but it's genuine.

Walkers will appreciate that Vindolanda sits bang in the middle of Hadrian's Wall country. You can easily combine it with visits to other wall forts - Housesteads is only a few miles away - and there's decent walking along the wall itself from here. Families with teenagers and history types will get the most from it; younger kids might lose interest fairly quickly unless they're already keen on Romans.

Allow two to three hours minimum. The site charges admission, and it's worth budgeting properly for it. Spring and autumn are best - summer gets rammed with school groups. Haltwhistle is your base town, just a short drive away, and you've got several camping options within easy reach - Hadrian's Wall Campsite is closest at 2.5 miles, while Herding Hill Farm offers a step up in comfort if you want glamping.
