Catshole Tor

The walk up Catshole Tor near Launceston is properly bracing - a steep granite climb that rewards you with views across Bodmin Moor and beyond. It's a real peak, the kind where you feel like you've actually earned the view rather than just wandered to a car park and back. The tor itself isn't massive, but that's rather the point. You get proper moorland scenery without the exhaustion of tackling Brown Willy or Rough Tor down the way.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's maybe an hour's round trip if you're not dawdling, though the ground's rough enough that you need to watch your footing. Families with kids over about eight or nine could manage it no bother, though younger children might find the final scramble a bit much. On a clear day you can see for miles - on a misty one, you're in proper wild moorland weather within minutes, which is half the charm.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Ekopod, Trewithen Farm, or Camp De Lank are all within five miles - it's an obvious morning outing. Get up early to avoid the wind that usually kicks in by afternoon. There's no formal car park that I could find, so park considerately near the access point and don't expect facilities. Free to access, naturally. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy a bit of actual moorland rather than just looking at it from a distance.
