Catter Law, Motte

The mound itself is what stops you in your tracks - a proper earthwork that rises up from the landscape near Stirling with the kind of deliberate shape that screams 'someone built this on purpose'. Catter Law is a motte, one of those Norman-era defensive mounds that dot Scotland, though this one isn't as famous as some of its cousins. You're looking at medieval fortification in its simplest form: a raised bank that would have supported a wooden palisade and tower back in the 11th or 12th century. Walk around the base and you get a real sense of the engineering involved, even if nothing remains standing.

It's the sort of stop that appeals most to history enthusiasts and archaeology types rather than casual family visitors. Kids under ten will likely lose interest within twenty minutes unless you're good at spinning yarns about Norman invasions. The walk itself is straightforward - no scrambling required - and the views across the surrounding lowland terrain give decent context for why someone chose to plant a fortification here.

Getting there from Glasgow takes the better part of an hour. If you're based at Loch Lomond Retreat (the only site with decent reviews nearby at 6 miles away) or one of the glamping pods closer in, you could fold it into a wider Scottish Lowlands circuit. It's free to visit and there are no visitor facilities on site, so bring what you need. Allow roughly an hour including a proper walk around the earthwork. Go when the weather's decent - muddy motte slopes aren't much fun.
