Cave Plantation

The walk into Cave Plantation catches you off guard. What starts as an ordinary forest track suddenly opens into a proper woodland gorge - steep sandstone sides rising up either side, with a stream running through the bottom. It's the kind of place that makes you think you've stumbled somewhere far wilder than South Yorkshire actually allows.

This is ancient woodland with real character. The gorge itself was carved out by water over centuries, and the trees have taken over with a vengeance - oak, birch, and sycamore creating a dense canopy that keeps the place cool even on warm days. There's genuine atmosphere here, especially deeper in where the light filters through in dusty shafts.

Walkers will get the most from it. Allow a good hour minimum if you're going properly into the gorge and back - the path's not strenuous but it's muddy and uneven underfoot, so decent boots matter. Families with younger kids might find twenty minutes enough before they get restless, but older children who enjoy spotting wildlife and splashing in the stream will be entertained far longer.

It's completely free, and you can access it any time. The nearest proper town is Doncaster, only about five miles away, which makes this a cracking spot for a quick outdoor break if you're staying at Sunnyview Touring Park nearby. It won't take over a whole day, but as part of a longer walk or a weekend exploring the local parks, it punches well above its weight. Real woodland, not manicured park stuff.
