Cefn Wylfre

The walk up Cefn Wylfre rewards you with proper views across the Radnor Forest and beyond - on a clear day you can see into the Black Mountains. It's a straightforward ascent from near Llandrindod Wells, nothing too technical, and takes about an hour to reach the summit if you're not stopping too often.

The peak itself isn't dramatic - you won't find jagged rocks or Alpine vibes here. What you get instead is open moorland, that characteristic Powys rolling emptiness, and the sort of quiet that makes you realise how few people bother to come this far. Walkers will find it a cracking spot for a winter stomp or a summer ramble when the light's proper golden.

It's free, obviously - just park sensibly at the trailhead and off you go. Allow two to three hours if you're bringing family and want space for a breather at the top. Don't expect facilities or any of that nonsense. You'll want boots, especially after rain, and the weather can turn quickly up there.

If you're staying at Fforest Fields or Great House Farm - both within five miles - this makes an easy half-day outing that doesn't demand much planning. Combine it with the Forest walks nearby and you've got a solid day outdoors. The view from up there? It's the kind that makes you remember why you drove to Wales in the first place.
