Red Hill

The walk up Red Hill takes about forty minutes from Llandrindod Wells, and the effort pays off handsomely. You're standing on a proper peak - nothing mountainous, but high enough that the Powys landscape rolls away beneath you in all directions. On a clear day you can see for miles across Mid Wales, which is the whole point of coming up here.

It's a straightforward walk, well-trodden and not particularly steep, making it ideal for families with older kids or anyone who wants a decent viewpoint without technical climbing. The summit's bare, so you'll feel exposed to the weather - bring layers. Most people allow two hours for the round trip, including time at the top to sit about and enjoy the views with a flask of something warm.

Historically it's been a beacon point and signal site, though there's not much left to see beyond the landscape itself. That said, the view is genuinely worth the trip. You're looking at proper empty country - far fewer tourists than the big Welsh peaks further west.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Fforest Fields is your nearest option at just over four miles away - Red Hill works perfectly as a half-day outing. Combine it with an afternoon in Llandrindod Wells itself, which has decent cafes and shops. The town's Victorian spa heritage is pleasant enough for a wander, though the main draw here is getting up high and looking about. Go early in the day if you can; afternoons often bring cloud.
