Challis House sits just outside Cambridge, a Grade II listed townhouse that's been preserved to show what life looked like for a well-to-do Victorian family. It's the sort of place history enthusiasts will spend a solid hour pottering about, reading the detailed information cards and imagining the domestic routines of the 1800s. Children under ten might find it a bit slow unless they're already keen on old houses - there's no interactive element or hands-on stuff, just rooms to look around. Adults who appreciate interior history, though, will find it absorbing.

The house works well as a half-day addition to a Cambridge visit rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Shepreth Mill or Pightle Farm - both within six miles - it's a reasonable drive before heading back to explore the colleges and riverside walks that dominate the area.
