Chapel Bog

The walk into Chapel Bog takes you through proper Aberdeenshire woodland, the kind where the trees close in and you realise how quiet things can get. It's a forest trail rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means squelchy underfoot after rain but infinitely more atmospheric for it.

You're essentially walking through ancient bog habitat surrounded by native trees. The peat beneath your feet has been accumulating for thousands of years, which sounds dull until you realise you're literally treading on millennia. Birdwatchers come here regularly - the bog supports species you won't see elsewhere in the region. The trail itself is manageable for most fitness levels, though proper waterproof boots aren't a luxury.

This is ideal for walkers who prefer substance over spectacle, and families with older kids who can manage muddy terrain without complaining. You won't find benches or facilities - bring what you need. Allow a couple of hours depending on how far you venture. Frankly, it's not the sort of place you'd plan a day around on its own, but it works brilliantly as a morning walk if you're based near Montrose.

Cloak Caravan Park and Upper Crawton Park both sit within striking distance for a night or two, and Chapel Bog makes a natural extension if you're already exploring the Aberdeenshire forest network. Go when it's been dry for a few days - the bog's charm doesn't extend to being genuinely waterlogged.
