Wide sandy beaches stretch for miles here, backed by rolling dunes that feel untouched despite being just minutes from the town centre. Montrose sits where the River South Esk meets the North Sea, creating a dramatic tidal basin that's home to thousands of migrating birds. The town itself is proper working Scotland - no tourist tat, just honest fishing boats and a high street that serves locals first.

Montrose Beach is the real draw. Two miles of golden sand with barely a soul on it, even in summer. The dunes behind are criss-crossed with paths perfect for morning walks before the wind picks up. St. Ternan's Church dominates the skyline, while The Whisper gallery showcases local artists in a converted Victorian building that's well worth a browse.

Beyond town, the countryside opens into gentle farmland dotted with ancient sites. The Stone of Morphie sits in a field 3 miles south - a Pictish symbol stone that's older than most European cities. Hill of Garvock offers cracking views across the Howe of the Mearns, though it's a bit of a slog to the top.

Woodlands like Knockhill Wood and Chapel Bog provide shelter on blustery days. Both have decent paths and the odd red squirrel if you're lucky. The Lewis Grassic Gibbon Memorial, tucked away in nearby countryside, marks the birthplace of Scotland's most overlooked literary genius.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A90 runs straight through, and it's barely 30 minutes north of Dundee. Staying at one of the nearby parks puts you right in the heart of Angus, with Dundee's attractions close enough for day trips but far enough away to feel properly rural.
