Chapel Wood

The woodland around Chapel Wood, just outside Macclesfield, is one of those places that doesn't announce itself much. You won't find a visitor centre or a car park with tidy signage. What you get instead is a proper forest walk through mixed deciduous trees, the kind where you might actually lose yourself for a bit if you're not paying attention to the path.

It's best suited to walkers rather than families with small children - the ground can be boggy after rain and the trails aren't particularly well-maintained or signed. That's partly the appeal if you like a bit of grit to your woodland rambling. Allow two hours to explore at a decent pace without rushing. There's something quietly satisfying about moving through older forest like this, away from the obvious tourist circuit.

The site is genuinely free to access. Go on a weekday morning and you'll likely have the place almost to yourself, which is rare this close to a proper town. Macclesfield itself has all the facilities you'd need - cafes, pubs, proper shops - so it works well as part of a wider day out.

If you're staying at Sycamore Farm Caravan Site or Royal Vale just down the road, Chapel Wood makes a solid morning walk before heading into town for lunch. It's not dramatic scenery - no vistas, no big stone monuments - but that's rather the point. Sometimes a forest is just a forest, and that's enough.
