Gleads Moss

A proper walk through Gleads Moss feels like stepping into one of those forgotten corners of Cheshire that most people driving past Macclesfield never know exists. It's woodland punctuated by open moorland - the sort of place where you'll spot heather, birch trees, and if you're lucky, the odd bit of bog that squelches underfoot. The paths aren't fancy or heavily maintained, which is exactly what makes it worth a morning or afternoon's ramble.

This isn't a spot for the tarmac-and-benches crowd. You'll want proper boots and shouldn't expect facilities beyond what nature provides. It works brilliantly as a walking destination though - good for families with older kids who won't complain about uneven ground, and genuinely decent for anyone after some quiet woodland air without the honeypot crowds. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to actually explore rather than just potter about for twenty minutes.

The real value is in pairing it with a few nights at one of the excellent caravan parks nearby. Yellowstone in Smallwood or Woodlands Park both sit within spitting distance and give you a proper base for exploring this side of Cheshire. Once you've done Gleads Moss, you've got the whole landscape around Macclesfield on your doorstep. It's the kind of walk you do on a decent day between other things - not a destination in itself, but absolutely the sort of place that makes a park holiday feel less like sitting still and more like actually going somewhere.
