Charltondown Covert is a proper working forest in Wiltshire, proper woodland where you can actually lose yourself for an afternoon without bumping into a visitor centre gift shop. It's the sort of place locals walk without thinking much about it, which is exactly why it's worth your time.

Walkers and nature types will get the most from Charltondown. Young kids might find an hour enough before wanting something with more obvious activities. There's no facilities to speak of - no café, no loos - so come prepared and don't expect the Disney version of a forest.
