Charwood Copse

Charwood Copse is a proper woodland walk just outside Chippenham - the sort of place locals know about but tourists tend to miss. It's ancient woodland, which means the trees have been here longer than most of us care to think about, and the floor is thick with leaf litter and the occasional fallen branch that looks like it's been decomposing since the Tudor era.

What you actually get is a straightforward forest walk through dense deciduous trees. There are paths, though they're not manicured - this feels like actual woodland rather than a park trail. Honestly, it's best for a brisk hour-long walk if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan sites - The Moors Campsite or Plough Lane are both close enough for an after-breakfast wander. Kids will either love scrambling through undergrowth or complain about mud on their trainers within fifteen minutes, so know your audience. History types might appreciate that you're walking through centuries-old woodland, but there's nothing visible to actually read about.

Don't go expecting facilities or signage. Bring a map or decent phone signal. Free to access, no registration needed. Works as a stretch-your-legs addition to a park holiday in the area rather than a destination in itself.
