A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Derry Wood sits just outside Chippenham and offers the sort of green space you need when you've had enough of market towns and cream teas. The paths wind through mixed deciduous forest - oak, beech, the usual suspects - and it's the kind of place where you might actually spot something other than other tourists. Quiet. That's the main selling point.

Walkers will find it genuinely worthwhile, especially if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites like Piccadilly or Blackland Lakes, both within easy striking distance. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes for a decent circuit depending on your pace and how often you stop to check what's making that rustling noise. Kids who are old enough to manage muddy boots without complaint will get on fine; younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes.

It's free to access as far as I can tell, and there's no gatekeeping about opening hours - this is proper countryside, not some managed attraction. Spring's best if you want bluebells and bird life, though autumn has its own appeal if you don't mind the damp. The ground can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots are essential rather than optional.
