Chatterley Whitfield Colliery, just outside Stoke-on-Trent, is one of Britain's oldest working coal mines - and now a heritage centre where you can actually descend into the pit to see what miners faced daily.

You get the full industrial experience here. The visitor centre tells the story through photographs, artefacts, and personal accounts. But the real pull is going underground. Descend 150 metres in the cage lift (genuinely thrilling, genuinely dark) and you're in the seams where men spent ten-hour shifts bent double. The guides know their stuff - many have mining family connections - and they don't sugar-coat conditions. Kids often find it properly gripping, though younger ones might find the cramped tunnels unsettling.

Allow three to four hours minimum. The underground tour isn't rushed, and the museum deserves proper time. Worth knowing: it's industrial heritage, not theme park comfort. There's no café, so bring refreshments. Check ahead for opening times and admission fees before you visit.
