Jane Austen's former home sits quietly on the edge of Alton, and it's the kind of place that makes literary pilgrims actually understand why their favourite author matters. This is where she lived her final eight years, and where she wrote or revised most of her major works - so if you've read Emma or Persuasion, you've essentially read words composed within these walls.

The house itself is an elegant red-brick Georgian property, nothing ostentatious but unmistakably the home of someone with taste and means. You walk through the rooms where she actually sat, see her writing desk, and suddenly the novels feel less like dusty classics and more like living things. The library is particularly good - full of period volumes that show what she and her family read.

It's essential for Austen devotees, obviously. Serious literature types will spend a good two hours here without rushing. Casual visitors might find it a bit thin on interactive elements - you're largely reading panels and looking at furniture - so families with younger kids won't get much from it beyond a pleasant walk around a nice house.

Chawton works well as part of a wider Hampshire explore. Wigwam Holidays sits just 0.7 miles away, making it genuinely convenient for a morning visit before heading elsewhere. Feather Down Manor Farm and Hampshire Hills both offer more extensive park facilities if you're planning a longer break in the area. Allow 90 minutes to two hours if you're properly interested, less if you're just stopping by. It's free entry - or was last I checked - which makes it a proper bargain for what you're getting.
