Cheesefoot Head

The chalk downland rolls up to a proper summit here, and the views across Winchester and far beyond make the short walk absolutely worthwhile. Cheesefoot Head sits just a few miles north of Winchester, where the South Downs rise up in that sudden, dramatic way they do - it's the kind of place where you realize the landscape has proper bones to it.

The walk itself is straightforward enough. You'll find yourself on open grassland with the sort of sweeping vistas that justify getting out of the car. On a clear day you can see for miles - Winchester Cathedral sits below you like a toy, and the patchwork of fields stretches out toward the horizon. It takes about forty minutes for a leisurely round trip, less if you're keen.

This is excellent for walkers and anyone who wants to stretch their legs without committing to a full day's hike. Families with older kids will find it manageable, though the littlest ones might tire on the chalk paths. The downland is exposed, so pick a day without too much wind - it can catch you off guard up there.

It's completely free and open access, which is the beauty of the South Downs. If you're camped at Winchester Morn Hill or Holden Farm, you're basically on the doorstep. Pair it with a proper wander around Winchester's high street and cathedral afterwards. Visit morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday glare bouncing off the chalk.
