Chesterfield Canal Shireoaks Section

The Chesterfield Canal at Shireoaks is a proper walker's stretch - about four miles of towpath that winds through woodland and opens onto water meadows near Worksop. You're following a restored industrial waterway here, one of those Georgian engineering projects that actually still functions after all this time. The Shireoaks section is the quieter end of things, which means you get birdsong instead of narrowboat congestion.

It's ideal for a gentle two-to-three-hour walk, or you can just pop down for an hour and stretch your legs along the water. The towpath itself is well-maintained and mostly level - no scrambling required. Families with kids under ten might find it a bit samey after a while (it's water and trees, mainly), but dog owners absolutely love this stretch. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; you'll see herons, kingfishers if you're lucky, and all manner of ducks.

Free to access, no gates or barriers stopping you. Early morning or late afternoon tends to be quieter and better for wildlife spotting. Spring and autumn are cracking times - less mud than winter, less crowded than summer weekends.

Since you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Riverside Caravan Park is barely two miles away, or Clumber Park Lodges just four miles further - you could easily combine this with a proper day at Clumber Park itself. That's got the grand house, formal gardens, and parkland walks. Do the canal early, grab lunch in Worksop, then head to Clumber for the afternoon. It works perfectly as a two-attraction day.
