Chichester Harbour National Landscape

The water here changes colour depending on the light and tide. One moment it's steely grey, the next almost turquoise where the shallows catch the sun. Chichester Harbour is a sprawling estuary on Hampshire's coast, just outside Chichester town, and it's the sort of place that rewards slow exploration rather than a quick tick-box visit.

It's essentially a working harbour - you'll see proper fishing boats, leisure vessels, and the occasional yacht - but the real draw is the landscape itself. The shallow waters, mudflats, and salt marshes create something genuinely special. The best way to experience it is on foot. There are decent walking trails around the perimeter, particularly around Dell Quay and Itchenor, where you get proper water views without fighting crowds. It's not dramatic or mountainous, but there's something meditative about it, especially at dawn or late afternoon when the light turns everything gold.

This works brilliantly if you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Stubcroft Farm, Concierge Camping, or Mill Rythe are all within easy reach. Walkers and birdwatchers will get the most from it; the marshes attract wigeon, curlew, and other waders depending on the season. Families with young kids might find it a bit sedentary unless they're keen on water spotting or building dens in the scrub. There's no admission fee, just turn up and explore. Allow a half-day minimum if you're doing any real walking. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's proper, understated English coastal landscape.
