Westlands Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured visitor attraction, Westlands Copse sits just outside Chichester and delivers exactly what it says on the tin: trees, paths, and the kind of peace you don't get on the South Downs. The forest floor here is dense with beech and oak, creating that filtered green light that makes you forget you're within spitting distance of a cathedral city.

It's the sort of place where you can disappear for an hour without feeling like you're in a theme-park forest. There are established walking routes threading through, though nothing dramatic - no viewpoints or ruins, just woodland. That means it's ideal for people who actually want to walk rather than photograph themselves somewhere. Kids will manage fine if they're the type who enjoy spotting fungi and turning over logs; if they need play equipment or ice cream, this isn't it.

Come in autumn and the light is exceptional. Spring's decent too when the bluebells show. Summer can feel a bit airless under the canopy, but at least it stays cool. Timing-wise, two hours gives you a proper explore without rushing. The admission situation is unclear - it reads like local access rather than a ticketed operation, which is very much in its favour.
