Chilcombe Hill Hillfort

The Iron Age ramparts at Chilcombe Hill catch you by surprise - one minute you're walking through ordinary Dorset farmland, the next you're standing inside a 2,500-year-old fort with views that stretch across to the Dorset ridgeway. It's not dramatic in the way of Maiden Castle, but that's rather the point. This is archaeology without the crowds.

The hillfort itself consists of two concentric banks and ditches that would have formed a proper defensive settlement. Walking the perimeter takes perhaps half an hour, and the physical scale only really hits you when you're actually treading the ancient earthworks. The surrounding countryside is properly lovely - rolling chalk downland that explains exactly why Iron Age communities chose to settle here.

Walkers get the most from Chilcombe. It's not a destination where you'll spend hours, but it's genuinely worth the detour if you're heading between Dorchester and the Dorset Coast. The site is free and unfenced - you simply park nearby and access it on foot. There's nothing to do here except look and think, which sounds sparse but actually works rather well.

Stay at Litton Lakes or Dorset Valley Glamping, both within a couple of miles, and you've got a proper hillfort walk to add to your morning. Combine it with a proper explore of Dorchester's Roman remains and you're getting a decent sense of the area's layer upon layer of human settlement. Go on a clear day - the views justify the walk.
