Roman legions once marched these chalk downs, and you can still feel their presence in this ancient county town that refuses to be hurried. Dorchester moves at its own pace, with Georgian facades lining the high street and proper market squares where Thomas Hardy once wandered for inspiration.

The town sits perfectly between coast and countryside. Head south and you'll hit the dramatic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, while north takes you into Hardy's beloved countryside of rolling chalk hills and ancient earthworks like Chilcombe Hill Hillfort. It's proper Wessex territory.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens make for a brilliant day out - the Southern Hemisphere Garden and Jungle Glade feel almost tropical against Dorset's mild climate. The various themed areas like the Sino Himalayan Glade showcase plants that have no business thriving this close to the English Channel, yet somehow do.

Archaeology buffs will love the scattered tumuli and hut circles dotting the landscape. These Bronze Age remains sit quietly in fields, often just a short walk from the town centre. St Mary's and St Peter churches anchor the spiritual heart of the place, their medieval stones weathered smooth by centuries of Dorset winters.

Getting here is straightforward - regular trains from London Waterloo take about two and a half hours, while the A35 provides decent road access from both directions. The surrounding countryside offers excellent walking, with bridleways threading through Hodders Coppice and Long Coppice providing proper countryside rambles.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're within striking distance of both the coast and the inland attractions, with Dorchester itself offering decent pubs and shops for supplies. Plus you avoid the summer crowds that descend on the coastal towns.
