Chippendale Clough

The woodland here drops away steeply into a proper ravine - all dark stone and rushing water if you time it right after rain. Chippendale Clough sits just outside Blackburn and feels genuinely wild for somewhere so close to town. You're walking through beech and oak, the ground thick with moss, and honestly it's the kind of place that makes you forget you're in Lancashire proper.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The paths are rooty and uneven, so wear decent boots and don't bring the pushchair. There's a stream at the bottom if you're into that sort of thing - kids will want to paddle, though it gets cold fast. Allow an hour to explore without rushing, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who stops to identify ferns.

Free to visit, no gates or barriers. The nearest caravan sites - Dale Hey Farm and Beacon Fell View are both within five miles or so - make it an easy add-on to a wider Pennine loop. You could easily combine this with a walk at one of the bigger parks if you're staying locally, though the clough itself won't take long enough to structure a full day around.

It's not dramatic or Instagram-ready. What you get instead is quiet, proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd find at the famous spots. Bring waterproofs. Go when it's overcast - that's when it really shows itself.
