Queen's Park

Queen's Park in Blackburn is a proper working nature reserve, not the manicured gardens you might expect from the name. The wetlands here are genuinely worth a visit if you're into birds and bog plants - it's the kind of place where you'll actually spot something interesting rather than just wander around killing time.

The reserve protects areas of wet woodland and marshland that are honestly quite rare in Lancashire. Bring binoculars and a decent field guide. Lapwings, reed warblers, and if you're lucky, water voles. The walking trails are straightforward enough - nothing steep, which makes it accessible for families with younger kids, though they might get a bit restless if they're not into nature spotting. Allow a couple of hours to do it properly without rushing.

It works well as a morning or late afternoon stop if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Northwood Caravan & Holiday Park is only 4.2 miles away, or Rossendale Holiday Cottages if you want something with a bit more space. Trawden Forest Glamping is also close by if you fancy something fancier. The reserve is free to access, which is increasingly rare these days.

Best visited in spring and autumn when migration brings in more variety. Summer can be a bit quiet. Winter's bleak but productive if you don't mind the cold. It's not a destination on its own, but slotted into a longer Lancashire break, it fills a gap nicely for anyone who actually wants to see wildlife rather than just photos of it.
