The ground floor takes you straight into Chippenham's weaving past - looms, textile samples, the whole industrial story that made this Wiltshire market town tick. It's genuinely absorbing if you care about how things were actually made, less so if you're after flashy interactive screens. Upstairs covers the broader local history: Roman finds, medieval bits, Victorian life. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's well-organised and you'll pick up proper details about the town's development.

The museum works best for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in industrial heritage - textile workers especially might find it oddly moving. Families with young kids will manage an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. It's free, which removes the sting if you decide it's not your thing.

Allow a couple of hours if you want to read the panels properly rather than just glance at objects. The staff know their stuff and will chat if you ask questions. Open weekdays and Saturday mornings - worth checking ahead if you're visiting mid-week during school holidays.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby - Plough Lane or Roe Deer Fields are both within walking distance - this is an excellent wet-weather option. Chippenham town centre's got decent pubs and a reasonable high street too, so you could combine it with a proper mooch around. It won't change your life, but it's a solid local museum that earns its free entry.
