Christchurch Ilkley

The church sits right in Ilkley town centre, a solid stone building that's been the beating heart of this moorland town since medieval times. Inside, you'll find proper Yorkshire stonework - thick walls, high ceilings, and that particular smell of old wood and polish that churches seem to perfect. The interior's been restored and tweaked over the centuries, so you get layers of history without it feeling frozen in amber.

It's worth a visit if you're passing through Ilkley or staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Olicana Park and Brown Bank are both close enough for a quick visit. The real pull here is the walk to get here. The town itself is excellent for rambling, with the moors rising up on all sides, so you can easily combine a look inside with a longer leg-stretcher. Half an hour's a reasonable amount of time to have a proper look around, though you won't need more than that unless you're really keen on the carved stones or want to sit quietly for a bit.

Families with older kids won't find it tedious - there's enough detail to notice if someone explains it - but under-tens might fidget. The real reason to come is as part of a wider Ilkley experience: coffee in town, a walk up to the stones on the moor, then a dip in here on the way back. It works as a natural full stop to a morning's walking. Check opening times before you go - church hours can be erratic.
