Christmas Dell hide

The viewing platform at Christmas Dell sits along the Royal Military Canal, offering one of the better vantage points across the Romney Marsh flatlands. It's a proper working hide, not some manicured tourist spot - you're here to watch birds and wildlife, and the landscape does most of the talking for you.

Walkers will appreciate it most. The approach from Herons takes you through quiet country lanes, and once you're at the platform, you've got unrestricted views across the marsh. Early morning or dusk is when the place comes alive - that's when you'll actually see something worth the trek. Birdwatchers know this already. Families with small children might find it a bit static; there's not much to do except look and listen, which some will love and others will find dull after twenty minutes.

It's free to use, and you can spend as long as you like. Allow an hour if you're making a proper morning of it, including the walk from town. The canal path itself is pleasant enough, fairly flat, so no major fitness required.

If you're based at Herons Park Campsite or Romney Sands further down the road, this works as a gentle morning excursion before heading elsewhere. It's the sort of place that rewards patience rather than spectacle - you won't find cafes or facilities, just mud, reeds, and the chance of spotting marsh harriers. That's either exactly what you want or completely not.
