About Church Copse
It's a walker's spot, really. Nothing dramatic, no viewpoints or marked trails that I could find, but if you're staying at Fox Wood Campsite or one of the caravan parks scattered round Patching way, it makes for a decent morning wander. The woodland floor gets muddy in winter; go in drier months if you've got young kids or anyone prone to complaining about their trainers. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're properly exploring the edges.
Don't expect facilities. There's no car park I'm aware of, no café, no interpretation boards. You're just walking through trees. Which is partly the point. If you're after manicured forestry with all the trimmings, head to one of the big Sussex properties instead. But if you want a genuine bit of woodland where you might actually hear birdsong rather than just see a sign about it, Church Copse delivers.
It slots in well with a broader South Downs ramble - combine it with a walk toward Washington or a visit to the nearby villages rather than making it a destination in itself. The campsite proximity makes it handy for that restless mid-morning energy when you need to get the kids out before lunch.
