Richardson's Wood

Tall beech trees tower overhead in this proper bit of ancient woodland that feels wonderfully untouched by the modern world. Richardson's Wood sprawls across the South Downs near Patching, offering winding paths through dense canopy where sunlight filters through in dappled patches.

Dog walkers and families after a gentle ramble will find plenty to enjoy here. The terrain isn't too challenging - mostly level ground with the odd gentle slope - so it works well for pushchairs on the main tracks. Kids can scramble about looking for wildlife, though don't expect any facilities or signage. This is proper countryside walking, not a manicured country park.

What makes it special is the sense of stepping back in time. Ancient woodland has this particular quality of light and stillness that plantation forests never quite manage. You might spot deer if you're quiet enough, and the birdlife is excellent throughout the year.

Allow a good hour for a decent circuit, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's fine. Spring brings carpets of bluebells, while autumn turns the beech leaves a brilliant copper. From nearby caravan parks like Fox Wood Campsite or Washington Caravan & Camping Park, it's an easy drive for a morning walk before heading to the coast. Well worth the short detour if you fancy proper woodland walking without the crowds.
