You'll find yourself walking into proper woodland the moment you arrive at Cintra Park - it's the kind of place that feels a world away from Reading, even though you're barely outside town. This nature reserve gives you real forest, open meadows, and enough quiet corners to actually hear yourself think.

The main appeal here is straightforward: it's a proper walk without any pretension. Locals come for the woodland trails, and they're well-maintained enough that you won't spend the day picking brambles out of your trousers. The meadow areas are good for spotting birds if you're into that sort of thing, and the tree cover means it's one of the few places around Reading that stays reasonably cool on hot days.

Walkers will get genuine value from an hour or two here - it's not massive, so don't expect an all-day expedition. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited once the novelty of the trees wears off, but if you've got teenagers who actually want to move, they'll appreciate the lack of crowds. History buffs won't find much to get excited about, but naturalists will spot plenty.

It works well as a break between Reading and the nearby holiday parks - Wellington Country Park is just five miles away if you're based that side, and Cintra gives you a proper stretch of the legs without the faff of driving into the countryside proper. Free to access, naturally, and there's no formal opening hours nonsense that you can't nip in whenever. Go early to dodge the weekend dog walkers.
