Clapgate Wood

Walk into Clapgate Wood and you're immediately wrapped in proper Essex woodland - the kind of place where the trees feel genuinely old and the paths fork in ways that make you want to wander a bit further than planned. It's a modest forest by most standards, nothing dramatic, but there's something solid about it that rewards a couple of hours of poking about.

The wood sits just east of Billericay and works brilliantly if you're camping at either Barleylands or Stuarts Wood. After a night under canvas, this is exactly the sort of place to stretch your legs without needing a map or worrying about getting properly lost. The trails wind through mixed woodland - plenty of shade, the usual autumn leaf carpet if you time it right, and enough variation to keep kids engaged rather than bored.

There's no visitor centre or café, which means you won't pay to get in and you won't be herded along. Bring a packed lunch if you want to make a morning of it. The woodland itself handles the heavy lifting - no need for attractions or signposted points of interest. Most people spend a couple of hours here, maybe longer if you're genuinely keen on spotting wildlife or just sitting quietly.

Worth the visit from a holiday park base? Absolutely. It's free, it's close, and it does what woodland should do: gives you space to breathe. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a camping break in Essex.
