Clarence Park, Bury

The River Irwell cuts through Clarence Park like it owns the place, and honestly, it rather does. This 14-acre nature reserve sits right on Bury's doorstep, a proper slice of Lancashire countryside wedged between suburban streets and the town centre. Walking the paths here feels like you've slipped into a different world entirely - willows hang over the water, you'll spot herons if you're lucky, and the whole thing has that peaceful, slightly overgrown quality that makes you forget you're minutes from the shops on Market Street.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick lap. Families with kids will find enough open grass to let them burn energy, and the riverside paths are gentle enough for pushchairs or elderly legs. Bird watchers should bring binoculars - kingfishers are occasional visitors, and in winter the water attracts all sorts. The walking community uses it constantly, often linking it with routes further along the Irwell Valley.

You'll want at least 45 minutes to an hour here to do it justice. It's free, naturally, and you can rock up whenever. Spring's brilliant when the trees come alive, but autumn's probably the best - fewer people, softer light on the water, and the geese start migrating through. If you're based at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Clarence Park makes an easy morning stroll before heading into Bury proper. Not Instagram-famous, but genuinely lovely for what it is.
