Clashnessie Fall

The waterfall thunders down a rocky gorge with proper force, especially after heavy rain. Clashnessie Fall lives up in the hills above Sutherland, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - which is exactly why it works. The walk in takes about twenty minutes from the car park, through woodland that feels genuinely remote even though you're not far from civilisation.

Walkers will love this one. The path is straightforward enough, though muddy in places, and the falls reward the effort with a real sense of achievement. Kids old enough to manage uneven ground will find it exciting without being dangerous. History buffs might appreciate the landscape itself - this corner of the Highlands has that raw, timeless quality that makes you understand why people have lived here for centuries.

It's completely free and takes roughly an hour from car to waterfall and back. Go after rain for the dramatic version, or in summer when the light is better for photographs. The main caveat is that mobile signal can be patchy, so know where you're going before you arrive.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite sits just down the road - a five-star spot that makes a brilliant base for exploring this part of Sutherland. The waterfall pairs well with walks along the coast or time spent simply soaking in the emptiness. It's not a major tourist draw, which is entirely the point.
