Clay Hill doesn't announce itself with fanfare, which is rather the point. This modest peak near Longney offers straightforward walking country without the crowds you'd find queuing at more famous Cotswold viewpoints. On a clear day the ridge walk rewards you with views across the Severn Valley - nothing dramatic, but proper English countryside rolling away in all directions.

The walk itself is gentle enough for families with decent legs, though it's not a pushchair job. Most people allow an hour for the round trip, give or take depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no facilities to speak of - you come here for the walk and the air, not the infrastructure.

It suits walkers far more than casual strollers. If your lot expects benches and ice cream vans, they'll find it thin. But for anyone camping at one of the nearby sites - The Glamping Orchard is just 2.2 miles away, or Apple Orchard Camping a touch further - it's an easy morning outing that doesn't eat into your day. Couples after a proper walk with genuine views will get more from it than families with small children.

Free to access, naturally. Best tackled early or late in the day when the light's better and other walkers are thin on the ground. Don't expect anything fancy, but do expect to feel you've actually earned the view.
