Walk into Monks Hill Wood near Longney and you're immediately among proper old-growth woodland - the kind of place where the canopy is thick enough to darken the forest floor even on bright days. It's a genuine forest rather than managed plantation, which means gnarled oaks, tangles of undergrowth, and the sort of paths that feel like they've been walked for centuries rather than designed by committee.

This is a walker's wood first and foremost. The trails wind through genuinely varied terrain - some muddy stretches, some steep bits, patches of dense bramble - so it rewards proper footwear and doesn't feel like a stroll round a park. The wood pairs well with a broader Gloucestershire ramble; it's the real thing rather than a tourist attraction done up for the guidebook.
