Cleaves Wood

Walk into Cleaves Wood and the noise from Trowbridge just disappears. It's a proper woodland - the kind with proper trees, not a manicured country estate affair. The paths wind through beech and oak, and on a damp day the whole place smells like earth and bark. Not huge, so you won't lose the afternoon here, but long enough for a genuine forest walk without the tourist crowds.

The woodland floor is soft underfoot, which makes it excellent for families with younger kids who tire on hard ground. There's something about walking among actual trees that feels more real than park trails, even if you're only ten minutes from the outskirts of Trowbridge. Walkers will find this worth the detour - the paths are clear enough but feel like proper woodland rather than manicured routes. Birdwatchers occasionally mention spotting nuthatches and greater spotted woodpeckers here, though you'll need patience and luck.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you want to cover the main paths without rushing. Best visited in autumn when the light filters through properly, or after rain when everything smells alive. Winter's decent too if you don't mind muddy boots.

If you're staying at Widbrook Barns or Brokerswood Holiday Park nearby, this makes a solid morning walk before heading elsewhere. Not the destination itself, but a proper addition to a Wiltshire break - somewhere to actually be in a wood rather than just walk past trees.
