Cliff Plantation

Wooded and wonderfully low-key, Cliff Plantation sits just east of Ipswich as a proper slice of Essex forestry that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. You get woodland walks through mixed trees - nothing dramatic, but solid and green and exactly what you need if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Priory Park or Newbourne Woodland Campsite and fancy stretching your legs without driving anywhere.

The plantation itself is straightforward: paths through established woodland, decent for families who don't need a visitor centre or gift shop, and genuinely free to explore (though do check locally for any access restrictions before you go). It's the sort of place where kids will potter about looking for sticks and spotting birds rather than demanding ice cream after twenty minutes. Allow an hour or so if you're making a morning of it, less if you're just breaking up a park-based afternoon.

Honestly, it works best as part of a bigger day out rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a walk towards Ipswich proper, or combine it with visits to the coastal parks around Felixstowe and Dovercourt if you're after more varied scenery. The forest does what it says on the tin - you get trees, fresh air, and relative quiet. In Essex terms, that's already a win. Don't expect dramatic views or manicured trails, but if you're camped nearby and want to burn some restless energy without faffing about with car journeys, it'll do nicely.
