Nacton Shores

The walk down to Nacton Shores is what makes it worthwhile - you get proper views across the Orwell Estuary, especially on a clear day when you can see right across to Felixstowe. The reserve itself is relatively small, a strip of foreshore and saltmarsh that doesn't demand hours of your time, but it's genuinely peaceful and good for spotting waders and wildfowl if you time it right around the tide.

It's the kind of place that works well for a gentle ramble rather than a destination in its own right. East of Ipswich, close enough for a morning visit if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Priory Park or Cosy Camping Suffolk. The paths are flat and easy, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though there's not much to actually do once you're there - no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find. Bring binoculars if you're into birds.

The real appeal is that it feels properly wild compared to much of the surrounding area. Wind off the water, salt in the air, mud underfoot in places. Not a postcard view, but authentic. If you're the sort who wants a quick nature fix between seaside time at Felixstowe and exploring Ipswich itself, this fits the bill. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking your time. Free access from what I can tell, which makes it a decent option when holiday park budgets are tight.
