Clip yr Orsedd

Sharp granite crags rise dramatically from the Welsh coastline just outside Penmaenmawr, forming one of North Wales' more accessible scrambles. Clip yr Orsedd translates roughly as 'rocky throne', and once you've hauled yourself up the steep paths, you'll understand why the ancient Celts gave it such a regal name.

Families with older children who fancy a proper challenge will find this hill rewarding, though it's definitely not pushchair territory. The route up involves some hands-on scrambling over rocky outcrops - proper walking boots essential. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you spend soaking up those cracking views across the Menai Strait.

What makes this peak special is the proximity to the coast. You're literally climbing from sea level to summit in one go, with Anglesey spread out below and Snowdonia's peaks forming a magnificent backdrop inland. On clear days, the Isle of Man appears on the horizon.

Timing matters here. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the coastal panorama, and you'll avoid the worst crowds that sometimes gather at weekends. Winter walks can be spectacular but require extra care on the exposed sections.
