Cloghachorcha

The walk up Cloghachorcha isn't long, but it's steep enough to remind your legs why they exist. This peak sits in the Mourne Mountains, that brooding range that dominates the skyline south of Newry, and once you're at the top the views sprawl across County Down in all directions. On a clear day you can see right across to Carlingford Lough and beyond. The climb takes the best part of an hour depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath, but the payoff is genuine. There's nothing fancy up there - no café, no visitors' centre, just grass and stone and the kind of quiet that only mountains give you. Walkers will absolutely have their time here. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog, though older children who don't mind a proper push will get something real from it. The Mournes as a whole are free to access, and Cloghachorcha is no exception. You won't need more than two hours total, including the descent. If you're based at any of the caravan parks nearby - Kilbroney is closest at just over three miles away - this is the sort of walk that fills a morning nicely before lunch. It works particularly well as part of a wider Mourne exploration rather than a standalone trip. The mountains deserve a few days to do them justice.
