Slieve Binnian

One of the Mourne Mountains' more challenging peaks, Slieve Binnian reaches 747 metres and rewards serious walkers with some of the best views in Northern Ireland. The granite tors scattered across its summit give it a distinctly lunar landscape - quite different from the rounded grassy tops you'll find elsewhere in the range.

Getting to the top isn't a gentle stroll. Most people tackle it from the Silent Valley car park, following the well-marked Mourne Wall that snakes across the mountainside. It's a proper climb that'll take around 4-5 hours return, with some steep scrambling near the summit. The rocky outcrops make for brilliant photo opportunities, but they're not ideal for young children.

Mountain enthusiasts and experienced walkers will love this one. The panoramic views stretch across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man on clear days, while the Silent Valley reservoir spreads out below like a mirror. Weather can change quickly up here, so waterproofs are essential even on sunny mornings.

Parking at Silent Valley costs a few pounds, but the mountain itself is free to climb. Early morning starts work best - fewer crowds and better light for photography. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Annalong Holiday Park or camping at Tollymore Forest Park, this makes for a brilliant day out, though you'll need to earn your evening meal first.
