Cnoc an t-Sabhail

The walk up Cnoc an t-Sabhail isn't long, but it's properly steep in places, and the view across the Moray Firth makes every knee-jarring step worth it. You're looking at maybe two hours round trip from Invergordon, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

It's a hill rather than a mountain - just over 200 metres - but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a doddle. The path climbs relentlessly through heather and bracken, and in winter or after rain it gets genuinely boggy. On a clear day though, you can see right across to the Black Isle and up towards the Sutherland mountains. The Firth itself sprawls below you like something from a postcard.

Walkers will get the most out of this one. It's the kind of walk that rewards you with proper views without demanding a full day's commitment. Kids aged eight upwards would manage it fine if they're used to hills, but younger ones might find it tedious - there's not much to see until you reach the top.

The nearest caravan parks - Newmore Highland Pods is just four miles away and highly rated - make this a natural add-on to a wider Highland break. You could do this in the morning, spend the afternoon exploring Invergordon's waterfront, and still have time to relax before dinner. Bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast.
