Coberley Long Barrow

Standing in a farmer's field just south of Cheltenham, this 5,000-year-old long barrow remains one of the Cotswolds' most accessible Neolithic burial chambers. The grassy mound stretches about 120 feet long and still shows clear traces of the stone chambers where our ancestors laid their dead to rest.

Walking around the site takes maybe twenty minutes, but archaeology enthusiasts could easily spend longer examining the partially exposed stonework and imagining the complex burial rituals that once took place here. The barrow sits on relatively flat ground, making it manageable for most visitors, though proper walking boots are essential as you're crossing working farmland.

Families with curious children will find it a proper outdoor classroom - kids love the idea of something this ancient right under their feet. History buffs appreciate that it predates Stonehenge by centuries, yet receives a fraction of the visitors.

Access appears to be free, though you'll need to respect the surrounding farmland and stick to established paths. The site works well as a short detour during a Cotswolds holiday, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites like Star Glamping or Big Skies. Allow an hour including the walk from wherever you can safely park. Best combined with a visit to nearby Cirencester's Roman museum for a proper timeline of ancient Britain.
