Cockey Down

Cockey Down is a modest chalk peak on the rolling downs south of Salisbury, the sort of place locals know and visitors often miss. The walk up takes twenty minutes or so from the nearest road, and the views across the Wiltshire valleys are genuinely rewarding - wide, open country that stretches for miles on a clear day.

It's not dramatic. Don't expect a mountain experience. But there's something about the simplicity of it that works, especially if you're staying at one of the caravan parks around Salisbury and fancy a proper walk without needing a full day. Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a bit of a slog on a hot day with nothing but grass and sky to keep them entertained.

The peak itself is unremarkable - just higher ground - but the journey rewards you with that big Wiltshire view. Go midweek if possible; weekends bring ramblers. Spring and autumn are best; summer can feel exposed and windswept up there.

If you're based at Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site or any of the sites within a few miles of town, this works as a half-day outing. Combine it with a walk around Salisbury itself or a visit to Old Sarum if you want to make a proper day of exploring the area. Parking is roadside and informal - arrive early or you'll be hiking from further out.
