Tumulus

A Bronze Age burial mound rising from the Wiltshire downland, Tumulus is one of those sites that rewards the effort of finding it. You won't get crowds here - partly because it's not signposted brilliantly and partly because most visitors make straight for Stonehenge, which is only a few miles away. The mound itself is modest, really, just a grassy hump in the landscape, but that's rather the point. This is archaeology in its quietest form.

What makes it worth the drive from Salisbury is the setting. You get proper Bronze Age atmosphere without the visitor centre coffee shop. The mound dates back several thousand years, a grave marker for someone significant enough to warrant this monument. Stand on top and you can see across rolling chalk downland - the same views Bronze Age communities would have seen.

Family groups with younger children might find it underwhelming after fifteen minutes. History enthusiasts and serious walkers, though, will appreciate the isolation and the chance to contemplate genuine age. There's no entrance fee, no opening hours - you simply visit. Allow half an hour unless you're combining it with nearby attractions.

If you're staying at one of the local farms - Campwell Farm is closest at under three miles - Tumulus fits neatly into a day exploring Wiltshire's prehistoric sites. Stonehenge Campsite is four miles away if you want a more facility-rich base. The real magic here isn't crowds or facilities. It's standing on a 4,000-year-old burial mound in near silence.
