Cockshut Wood

Ancient woodland doesn't get more accessible than Cockshut Wood, just outside Bridgnorth. You're looking at mature beech and oak trees that have been here for centuries, with proper established paths threading through - the sort of place where light filters through the canopy in that particularly English way that makes you want to slow down.

It's straightforward woodland walking rather than dramatic scenery. There's a network of trails suitable for families with decent boots and a bit of patience; children tend to enjoy the fallen logs and general scattering-about potential more than grand vistas. Dogs go mad for it. If you're in for the long haul, allow a couple of hours to do the main routes without rushing, though you can dip in for forty minutes if time's tight.

The wood sits well within reach of several solid touring parks - Wheathill is barely four miles away, and Greenway and Woodland Escapes aren't much further. If you're basing yourself at any of them for a Shropshire break, this makes a natural half-day addition rather than a destination in itself. Spring's particularly worth timing a visit for bluebells, though honestly any season bar deep mud offers something. It's free, unstuffy, and doesn't require planning beyond checking the weather. No visitor centre, no facilities to speak of - just proper woodland on your doorstep.
